Finally ... snow and sun in Boshuizerbergen!

The last time there was enough snow was in 2017, at the time - for me - completely unexpected. Often the snow is already gone the next day and you don't get a chance of shooting beautiful sunny winter landscapes with snow.

This time it was completely different. The warnings for snow, sleet and frost had been announced for a week, and the frost would last at least a week. So I could choose a sunny day for shooting winter sceneries in nature reserve Boshuizerbergen. You can see the result of this sunny winter shoot in this series. Who knows ... I might have to wait another 4 years for some snow :)

Characteristic for Boshuizerbergen are the shifting sand areas with a large core of juniper thickets and the surrounding pine forests.

On a sunny morning in october and november it is a good time to visit the forest for an early morning walk. Even on a cold day the warm tones and sun wont make you feel cold :)

For me autumn is fog and colors and at its best when the sun is trying to peak through the fog. From half october until early november you can find me in the forest. I try to go out as much and long as possible to enjoy the colorful trees ... before the show is over and all the leaves are on the ground.

I am working on 3 series that feature autumn:

1) Autumn Bergerheide 2017
Walk with me through the beautiful nature reserve of Bergerheide on several days in october 2017.

And there is a 4th serie which features the forest Ballonzuilbossen which was at the beginning of autumn before the colors changed but it really felt like autumn. Now it is waiting for this misty mood with autumn colors :)

4) Green Autumn Mood Ballonzuilbossen
Its still very green in the forest ... but it feels like autumn.

Finally ... enough snow at Boshuizerbergen!

I have been waiting for over 2 years now until there is enough snow to capture some winter sceneries in nature reserve Boshuizerbergen. There was some snow before - since I started with photography in the summer of 2014 - but just enough to cover the soil and almost no snow on the trees. Until now I could only capture winter sceneries with just a touch of snow.

This saturday I woke up and noticed the strange noise of the passing cars ... huh is that snow?. I jumped out of bed to look outside and I was surprised by the view and amount of snow! I must have missed a weather forecast or all the meteorologist must have had an off-day :).

No time to loose! Because it was already 07:30, I choose to drive to the closest location and capture the winter sceneries I was looking forward too for such a long time.

You can see the result of my first real winter shoot in this series. Who knows ... I might have to wait another 2 years for some snow :)

August is the month of blooming heather. Before autumn changes the color palette in the forest, the heather will give the normally fairly colorless heathland a purple glow. The rolling landscape of National Park De Maasduinen combined with the purple heather, the light and shadows during sunrise make the nature reserves very beautiful and photogenic.

In August I also try to go out more to shoot in the early morning hours, just like in the fall. The purple glow is gone before ... read more
